U.S. Coast Guard has informed that another film of oil 1.5 Km x 30m is spreading in the region of the explosion, which occurred Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico. Earlier, the company Mariner Energy, which owns the exploded rig, had said that there were no signs of pollution in the area.
As a result of the explosion and fire on oil rig one person was injured, 13 people working on the rig were deep inside the water and were subsequently rescued. Reason for the explosion is still unknown. U.S. authorities dispatched seven helicopters, two aircraft and four vessels to the scene 180 km south of Vermilion Bay (Louisiana). Work on the rig was carried out at a depth of 750 meters.
Department of Homeland Security had previously announced that no oil and gas production was carried out at the facility. Meanwhile, according to the agency, the rig could have up to 4.2 thousand gallons of oil.
Raoul LeBlanc, a representative from PFC Energy (an energy conulstant company), stated that “It’s unlikely to have long-term implications for production in the Gulf of Mexico”.
