Cupertino, California-based Apple, Inc. has launched Ping, a new online social networking site for music fans that the company hopes can match up with Facebook and twitter.
The company also launched Apple TV, a service that allows movie and television show streaming via the Internet.
Online social networking site Ping comes with Apple’s iTunes software program which is used by more than 160 million users worldwide for downloading songs and organizing music tracks.
“One of the biggest things we focus on with iTunes is discovery. There are more than 12 million songs to choose from, so how do you find new stuff?,” said Steve Jobs, chief executive officer of Apple, in a press conference held at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco.
“So we’re launching Ping – it’s a social network that’s all about music. It’s like Facebook and twitter meets iTunes. You can follow your favorite artists and friends and discover what music they like and are downloading,” Jobs explained about the nature of the new online social networking site.
