On Thursday, AT&T has confirmed the date of release, as well as pricing information for the company’s counterpart to the Samsung Galaxy S Smartphone, the Samsung captivate. The phone, which runs via Android programming, will be launched on July 18 at the price of $199.99. The phone comes with a lock-in for 2 years, and requires and AT&T voice and data plan.
With its July 18 release, AT&T becomes the first big US carrier to come up with its own version of the Galaxy S. Next in line is T-mobile, which will release the Samsung Vibrant on July 21.
Verizon’s Samsung Fascinate and Sprint’s Samsung Epic 4G do not have specific release dates and pricing data as of the present.
With its launch, the Samsung Captivate will earn the distinction of being the most advanced smartphone with an Android base for AT&T, which has recently released several smartphones built on the Android program.
Similar to other Galaxy S versions, the Samsung Captivate will run on the Android 2.1 program, and will later be upgraded to 2.2 by late summer. The smartphone boasts a 4-inch AMOLED display, 5-megapixel camera, 1 Ghz Hummingbird processor, 32 Gigs worth of storage, and Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth capabilities.
The Galaxy S gives Samsung a much needed boost in the competitive Android Market and have even garnered a spot in ‘The 10 Coolest Smartphones of the Year (So Far)’ list by CRN.
