A recent study conducted by the doctors at Duke Clinical Research Institute is suggesting that the use of a famous cardiac implant increases the risk of patients in developing heart attacks and from dying from the conditions.
According to the study that looked into more than 100,000 individuals using the implantable cardioverter-defibrillators or ICD, 1/5 of these patients did not exactly need the said device. The researchers also have found out that a substantial 20% of the population did not pass the requirements of evidence-based guidelines in order to receive an ICD.
The researchers also remarked, “These patients had a significantly higher risk of in-hospital death than individuals who met criteria for receiving an ICD.” However, they also admit, “The degree to which physicians in routine clinical practice follow these evidence-based recommendations is not clear.”
The said researchers, finally maintains, “While a small risk of complications is acceptable when a procedure has been shown to improve outcomes, no risk is acceptable if a procedure has no demonstrated benefit.”
The said study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
