Woods remarked during a practice, “So I’m here playing. It didn’t feel good on Sunday (at the Masters), that was tough. I played through it. I had to. I was in the midst of competing and had to power through it, so I did. I was able to shut it down for a little bit and was able to take care of it.”

As part of his recovery plan, Tiger Woods is depending on ice application, elevation of the affected leg and taking medication. A real fighter, he also commented during the interview, “Nothing major. I have a slight injury, you’ve just got to listen to the docs, take some time off and do the proper rehab. That’s the way it goes.”

Timepiece-maker Omega, the official provider of timing devices for the London Olympics slated for 2012, has been faced with an embarrassing situation a huge clock it installed at the Trafalgar Square just recently has suddenly stopped.

The digital clock, which was supposed to run non-stop until the opening of the 2012 Olympics, was installed just hours before it apparently decided to malfunction.

“We are obviously very disappointed that the clock has suffered this technical issue,” Omega said in a statement.

According to reports, the clock stopped at 500 days, 7 hours, 6 minutes and 56 seconds before the Olympic Games.

The clock was showcased Monday by London Olympic organising committee (LOCOG) chairman Sebastian Co. There were also Olympic gold medalists at the unveiling, Reuters reports.

Omega says that they will be investigating what caused the embarrassing incident. The Swiss timepiece maker also vowed to fix the clock at the soonest possible time.

According to Reuters, Omega has been supplying timepieces for the Olympic Games since 1932.

The former World Number 1 Russian professional female tennis player and now the world’s 13^th, Maria Sharapova, in a statement released in her website will not be able to compete in the game in Paris because of an ailment. As a result, Stephanie Cohen-Aloro of France will replace Sharapova.

Accordingly, the 23 year old Sharapova has contracted a disease caused by a virus and her physicians have advised her to withdraw from the said competition. Perhaps even disappointed and saddened by the advice, Sharapova related, “I have been sick since the weekend [upper respiratory viral illness] and upon seeing the doctor this morning, I have taken his advice and reluctantly had to withdraw.” She also wrote, “Even though I did everything possible to be ready to play, unfortunately, I am just unable to.”

 In a related news, Maria Sharapova also revealed tidbits to Us regarding her engagement ring given by basketball player, Sasha Vujacic. She admitted, “He completely surprised me! I’m so lucky and very much spoiled. It was very special and obviously a very memorable evening in my life. It’s something I’ll always remember, it was very sweet.”

Belgian tennis star and former No. 1 Justine Henin has once again announced her retirement from tennis on Wednesday, as she is continuously being troubled by an elbow injury that has been resurfacing persistently.

“I have undergone several tests the past few days, confirming that my elbow has sustained a lot more damage during my adventure in Australia,” Henin, who has seven Grand Slam Titles to her name, said on her website.

Henin has made public her retirement five days after she lost to Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4, 7-6 (8) in the third round of the Australian Open.

“The past few weeks, there was a little bit more pain every day, but I thought my willpower would prevail. Today, the tests and my doctors are adamant,” Henin said.

In 2008 also when she was ranked No. 1 in the ATP ranking, she announced her retirement. Last season she again made a comeback and reached final of Australian Open and even went on to win a couple of titles in 2010. She reportedly suffered ligament damage in her right elbow during Wimbledon last year and since then Henin’s problems have not shown any sign of getting lesser.

“It is clear now that I have to accept that my career ends for good,” wrote Henin. “Even if it is hard, very hard, at a time when I came back with enormous fighting spirit,” added the current world No. 13 tennis player.

South African cyclist Carla Swart was killed in a truck accident during time exercises training in the Free State province of her native South Africa, cycling officials said.

The 23-year old Swart, who finished eighth in a road race at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi last year and 10th at the Road World Championships, was trying to retrieve her cycling computer when she was hit by a truck.

“The truck hit Swart full on, flinging her into the air,” said Cycling SA team manager Barry Austin, who witnessed the tragic truck accident. “I could see how the driver pushed as hard as he could on his brakes,” Austin said. “He even swerved to the right so as to avoid smashing into Swart, but it was to no avail.” Swart succumbed to injuries and died before she reached a hospital.

Swart’s triumph at the Commonwealth Games paved the way for her selection by the HTC-Highroad cycling team earlier and was set to debut for the U.S. squad this year when she met the unfortunate truck accident.

The 23 year old former World No. 1 Russian player, Maria Sharapova is back in the game as she defeated the 22 year old German professional tennis player, Julia Goerges during the 2011 Australian Open. Goerges bowed to Sharapova in a three-set competition; 6-4, 4-6 and 4-6.

Earlier on, Goerges won over Edina Gallovits-Hall and Kaia Kanepi while Sharapova fought against Tamarine Tanasugarn and Virgie Razzano.

What became more interesting in the Sharapova-Goerges faceoff was the development of an undercourt air bubble which resulted in the inability of the ball to bounce in the spot of the court where it formed. Umpire Kerrilyn Cramer readily called for the concerned personnel to check on the problem and to resolve it. In a statement released by Wayne McKewen, the tournament referee, he related, “This afternoon during the warm-up for the last match on Hisense Arena a slight rise in the court surface was noticed. The warm-up was halted for several minutes while the area was repaired. I, along with other tournament officials, then assessed playing conditions and deemed the court fit for play.”

As for Maria Sharapova, she commented, “Maybe it was comical to you, it wasn’t really comical to us. We warmed up and had to sit and wait for a while. They took care of it pretty fast.”
