New York City today celebrates 80^th anniversary of the historic landmark in town – the Empire State Building. It was opened on May 1, 1931. That day the building was inaugurated by President Herbert Hoover with the pressing of button in The White House that turned on the lights in this historic structure.

Construction of 102 story skyscraper began in 1929 and it took them 410 days to complete this herculean task.

“Empire State Building”, bearing structures made of steel and aluminum, while the outer one is finished with granite and limestone for long 40 years held the title of being the tallest building in the world. Its height is 443 meters. Empire State Building not only survived the Great Depression, but a serious catastrophe also. On 28^th July 1945, a B-25 bomber crashed into the building after losing sight due to heavy fog.

It was only in the year 1973, when twin towers of World Trade Center were erected in the NYC, the Empire State Building lost its title of “highest building”. However, the skyscraper has not lost its appeal to the New Yorkers and its visitors. Observation decks, located on 86^th floor of the building, offer a splendid view over the city.

After the collapse of WTC Twin Towers after terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, Empire State again became the tallest building in New York. At the moment it is the third tallest building in the U.S. after the Willis Tower and the Trump International Hotel and Tower, both in Chicago. Moreover, it is the ninth tallest building in the world.

European  Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas has allowed EU countries “to defer for a limited period” the rules seeking the ease of  carrying liquids in hand luggage, reports FT.

At least ten of the 27 EU countries refused to ease the rules for carrying liquids in hand luggage by air passengers. Lifting of the ban is also not supported by Switzerland, which is not included in the EU, but since the end of 2008 it joined the Schengen Agreement.

As per press statement issued by EC, Kallas will in this regard conduct consultations with the EU and the U.S., which is another key destination for ​​flights from Europe.

On Friday, the Barcelona City Council voted to ban walking around in the city wearing swimming trunks, swimsuits and bikinis, reports AFP .

Violators of this ban face a fine ranging from 120 to 300 euros. In case, some nudist tries to walk out in the street, he or she will have to shell out anywhere from 300 to 500 euros.

In a statement the city council pointed out that with these restrictions they intend to ensure the coexistence of citizens in public places. Barcelona authorities have rejected the accusations that they are trying to teach people what and how to dress.

Central Bohemian Region in Czech Republic, lacking the inflow of tourists compared with the country’s most popular destination Prague, is going to attract tourists with hunting tours. 817 hunting areas and 30 natural reserves have been earmarked for this purpose, where you can hunt pheasants and hares, deer and other animals.

The popularity of social networking has reached such an extent that people across the world not only want to name their children after Facebook but now places are being named in its honor. We are talking about an island in Croatia, which is getting the name Facebook, reports Croatian Times. The move has been initiated by Pierini Bebic, Mayor of the town of Hvar. This town is situated on islands known by the same name in Croatia. According to reports, the mayor has already sent an invitation to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, asking him to come to the island during the summer holidays. Hvar is also known as the sunniest island in the Adriatic.

If Zuckerberg agrees to such an unusual idea, one of the island in the chain of Pakleni Otoci (Pakleni Islands), which is now called the Veli Vodnyak (Great Waters), will be named as Facebook. It is a small island, and has a lighthouse located on it.

Bebic and the inhabitants of Hvar are hoping that after renaming, the island will become a new tourist attraction and draw attention of tourists, report agencies. It is worth noting that at present about 30 percent of Croatians are registered users of Facebook.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed into law a measure that sets up a car accident registry that allows officials to immediately contact family members of a person who dies from a vehicular accident.

“Sara’s Law” was named for Sara Dubinin who died in a car accident in 2007. Authorities were not able to notify her parents about the mishap until two hours later.

Next-of-kin registry laws have also been enacted in Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.

New Jersey residents can submit two names to the Motor Vehicle Commission for the office to contact in case of a car accident that results to injury or death.

The data in the registry is not open to the public and will have access restricted only to a few agency personnel and law enforcement officers.

New Jersey’s new car accident registry law will be implemented 18 months from now partly to give some time for computers and employees to process the new data.

British travelers have yet to be paid holiday claims that they are seeking from insurers related to the volcanic eruption that left many stranded across Europe last year.

Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano sent a huge plume of ash into the skies over Europe in April 14, 2010 forcing airports to shut down flights.

One year later, holiday claims filed by the affected passengers were reportedly still being reviewed by insurance firms if it was a true “adverse weather event”. Leading travel insurers Axa and Europ Assistance have declined to pay holiday claims because of this reason.

Airlines had already paid affected passengers refunds as well as food and accommodation expenses because of flight cancellations. Passengers have been frustrated by the slow release of compensation and some have brought the matter to the courts.

Some insurers are flatly denying holiday claims while airlines said they did not pay some claims because they were excessive.

Google is nearing government approval of its bid to buy travel firm ITA Software after being fraught with antitrust investigations for months, a report coming from The Associated Press says.

Citing “a person with knowledge of the situation”, the AP says that the $700 million deal could be approved as early as Friday.

The deal has been under intense attention as rivals of the internet search and advertising giant has accused that the deal will give Google unfair advantage in the online aspect of airfare search and booking.

Rivals fear that with Google’s dominant search engine, it might build an airfare comparison site powered by ITA Software’s technology and use the system to dominate searches for airfares with the Google search engine.

ITA Software’s technology powers reservations systems of sites such as TripAdvisor and Hotwire. Analysts say that the case will reflect just how much US authorities would want to control the spread of Google’s influence outside its strongest fields which are internet search and advertising.

The fuselage break suffered by a Southwest Airlines 737 jet last week has prompted Australian flag carrier Quantas to perform checks on four of its older 737 airplanes.

However, the airline said that reports claiming it will ground the four older planes are untrue. It said that checks will be carried out within the next 10 days.

The fuselage of a Southwest Airlines 737-300 jet from Phoenix, Arizona tore and made a gash of about 5 feet last week, reports say, prompting the plane to make an emergency landing at a military base about 250 kilometers from where it took off.

The incident has also pushed the Federal Aviation Administration in the US to issue a world-wide directive to inspect similar aircrafts.

According to reports, the directive affects 175 Boeing 737-300, 400 and 500 airplanes owned by various firms worldwide.

Qantas spokeswoman Emma Kearns said in a statement that Quantas does not “have to ground them, we just have to carry out inspections on four of the fleet in line with the airline worthiness directive by the FAA.”
