It was another sad day in Japan as the Tokyo Electric Power Company has acknowledged that the company has reportedly suffered from 1.25tn yen roughly equivalent to $15B for the past year. Apart from that, the president of Tepco, Mastaka Shimizu, the one responsible for operating the Fukushima nuclear power plant also resigned from his post.

In a press conference in Tokyo, Shimizu acknowledged, “I wanted to take managerial responsibility and bring a symbolic close. We put the highest importance on experience and expertise in our business operations when we chose the person for the top post.”  Speaking to the public, he further remarked, “We want to sincerely apologize for our nuclear reactors in Fukushima causing so much anxiety, worry and trouble to society.”

The resignation of Shimizu was expected as he was harshly criticized for not making a public appearance in the event of the problems in the nuclear reactors. Reports show that he was later hospitalized because of episodes of dizziness.

Now, Tepco will be controlled by managing director Toshio Nishizawa.

An earthquake that tipped the scales at a magnitude of 5.9 has caused the lives of two people in Turkey particularly in Kutahya province. Accordingly, the quake struck a few moments before midnight local time. Its epicenter was reportedly focused on the town of Simav in Kutahya.

With the incident, people began running through the streets where a significant number of the population even spent the night in their cars because of different warnings sent out.

The confirmation of the two fatalities was made by Environment Minister Veysel Eroglu. He further pointed out that 79 individuals were injured and from that number, there is one who is in serious condition.

The said earthquake resulted in 50 aftershocks as stated by the Kandili Observatory based in Istanbul. It can be recalled that in 1999, Turkey suffered from two earthquakes both with a magnitude higher than 7; around 20,000 persons were killed. Eleven years later, 51 individuals were killed in another quake.

It has probably been one of the most controversial days and weeks of his life but decisions had to be made and one critical one was made by no less than the (International Monetary Fund) IMF Chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn as he quit his roles, duties and responsibilities in his post following allegations of sexually assaulting a New York City hotel maid.

In a statement released by the 62 year old economist and politician most notable for the name, DSK, he confirmed that he had already told the board of his intention to resign “with immediate effect”. Again, he denied having anything to do with the allegations hurled at him.

The statement of the IMF Chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn read as follows, “It is with infinite sadness that I feel compelled today to present to the Executive Board my resignation from my post of Managing Director of the IMF. I think at this time first of my wife – whom I love more than anything – of my children, of my family, of my friends. I think also of my colleagues at the Fund; together we have accomplished such great things over the last three years and more. To all, I want to say that I deny with the greatest possible firmness all of the allegations that have been made against me. I want to protect this institution which I have served with honor and devotion, and especially – especially – I want to devote all my strength, all my time, and all my energy to proving my innocence.”

The former California Governor known for his Hollywood stint as the Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger has admitted that he fathered a child with a household employee more than a decade ago.

In a statement given, Schwarzenegger relayed, “After leaving the governor’s office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago.” He further remarked, “I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family.”

On the other hand, the journalist and author wife of the 63 year old Schwarzenegger, Maria Shriver, in a statement, said, “This is a painful and heartbreaking time. As a mother, my concern is for the children. I ask for compassion, respect and privacy as my children and I try to rebuild our lives and heal.”

Just recently, Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife announced that they were separating after being together for 25 years. They have four children: Katherine, Christina, Patrick and Christopher.

Mr. Strauss Khan, head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), was arrested, jailed, then denied bail over his alleged sexual assault on a hotel maid this Saturday. Sixty-two year old Khan was arrested when he boarded a plane, causing the Judge to conclude he is a flight risk.

Mr. Khan, who denies all charges made against him in the case, had been considered a favorite in France’s presidential elections in 2012, but for now he will be a guest at New York’s infamous Rikers Island jail. Khan’s lawyer offered $1 million bail and requested that the IMF chief be allowed to stay at his daughter’s New  York residence until Friday, but Judge Melissa Jackson denied this request.

Pressure has been increasing on the IMF chief to step down since events on Saturday.  Spanish Finance Minister Elana Salgado expressed her support for the alleged victim in the case, and her Austrian counterpart, Maria Fekter, implored Khan to consider his position.   Mrs. Fekter said she would not comment about judicial issues, but “in view of the situation, that bail has been refused, he himself must deliberate on whether he is hurting the institution.”

Mr. Khan, if convicted of the seven charges against him, could be sentenced to 25 years in prison.

In the latest breaking news, tycoon and television personality has affirmed that he is not gunning the US presidency in 2012. Such confirmation ends weeks of rumors and speculation as to whether the 64 year old Trump will choose public service versus the private sector.

In a statement given, Trump remarked, “This decision does not come easily or without regret. I maintain the strong conviction that if I were to run, I would be able to win the primary and ultimately, the general election.”

He further commented, “I have spent the past several months unofficially campaigning and recognize that running for public office cannot be done half heartedly. Ultimately, however, business is my greatest passion and I am not ready to leave the private sector.”

The said announcement of Donald Trump was made on Monday after several weeks of traveling to different states in the United States and in the wake of the announcement of Mike Huckabee who has expressed that he is not seeking the Republican nomination for presidency.

The 68 year old ruler of Libya, Colonel Muammar Muhammad al-Gaddafi is pretty confident that those who are pursuing him won’t find themselves successful despite their persistence. Recently, a government spokesperson of Libya has remarked that Gaddafi is indeed in very good health and high spirits despite claims that he is injured.

After such confirmation from Moussa Ibrahim, a government TV also affirmed that Col Gaddafi was indeed alive despite suggestions that he was injured. In the unexpected TV broadcast, the Libyan leader expressed, “I say to the crusader cowards that I live in a place that you cannot reach and kill me in it because I live in the hearts of the millions. Immortality is for the martyrs, and death, infamy and disgrace are for the treacherous agents and their cowardly masters.”

Muammar Muhammad al-Gaddafi has ruled Libya since the military coup that occurred on September 01, 1969. He was responsible for establishing the Libyan Arab Republic and for toppling King Idris.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, speaking at a news conference in Rome sought to reassure Pakistan that the United States values its help, calling bilateral relations between the two countries “productive”.  Pakistan has come under fire and scrutiny the past week following the raid in Abbottabad because Osama bin Laden had been living for years in a compound there.

CIA Director Leon Panetta said Pakistan was purposely not told about the upcoming raid to capture or kill Osama bin Laden because of concern he would be tipped off by someone in its government.  However, Pakistan Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani tried to put the massive security failure by the Pakistan government in a different light, calling it an “intelligence failure of the whole world, not just Pakistan alone”

Speaking at the news conference Secretary Clinton said the relationship with Pakistan is not always easy, “but on the other hand it is a productive one for both countries” with regard to the cooperation between the governments, law enforcement agencies, and militaries in each country.

“Soon—with help from Allah—their happiness will turn into sorrow, and their blood will be mixed with their tears” vowed Al Qaeda in a statement it released to Jihadist forums on Friday in which it confirmed what President Barack Obama announced Sunday night – Osama bin Laden is dead.

The Site Intelligence Group, which keeps track of Islamist websites, translated the statement which was posted several days after a small group of U.S. Navy Seals raided a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where Osama bin Laden was living.  Al Qaeda’s statement was filled with a tone of vengeance and a promise to continue on its path of jihad in order to “see either victory and success and conquest and empowerment or we die trying.”

The message said Osama’s death will be a curse that goes after Americans inside and outside their country, and promised Al Qaeda will not deviate from its path of jihad “until Allah judges between us and between our enemy with truth. Indeed, he is the best of all judges.”

Almost ten years after the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington on September 11, 2001, U.S. President Barack Obama went on television to tell the nation that the mastermind of those attacks, Osama bin Laden, was killed in an operation carried out by a small group of American forces in Pakistan.

The president began his address last night, May 1st 2011, by saying: “Tonight I can report to the American people and to the world, that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaida, and a terrorist who was responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children.”

Obama explained in his address that after he took office he instructed the CIA director Leon Panetta to make the killing or capture of bin Laden the top priority of the government’s war against al-Qaida. President Obama said that he was briefed last August on a possible lead on Osama’s location, and after months of investigation it was determined that Osama was hiding in a compound deep in Pakistan.

Last week, the president said he decided that there was sufficient intelligence to act, and so yesterday he authorized an operation in which a small team of Americans raided the compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.  No Americans were hurt and the president said the team was careful to avoid civilian casualties.

“After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden, and took custody of his body”, the president said.
