Moreover she also had added in the cable that the reactor was not aimed for peaceful purposes.

The text of the cable, published on Friday by an Israeli Daily Yediot Ahronoth, sent by then US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice says “On September 6, 2007, Israel destroyed the nuclear reactor built by Syria secretly, apparently with North Korea’s help.”

“Our intelligence experts are convinced that the attack targeted by the Israelis is in fact an atomic reactor of the same type built by North Korea in Yongbyon,” Rice wrote in the cable dated April 25, 2008.

“We have good reason to believe that the reactor was not built for peaceful purposes,” she wrote in the cable, while adding that the attack had been carried out just weeks before the reactor was to be commissioned.

According to the leaked cable, Rice had also mentioned that Syria had always refused to allow International Atomic Energy Agency or any media to inspect the site highlighting the secrecy of the project.

After the attack, Syria had said that the structure attacked by Israeli Warplanes was a “military site under construction” and not a nuclear reactor, whereas Israel has never admitted that it ever conducted any such attack.

Yediot said this Wikileaks cable is a first official confirmation of attack carried out by Israel on September 6, 2007.

“The Israeli mission was successful – the reactor was destroyed without an option of rehabilitation. Syria completed the site’s evacuation, got rid of the evidence of what existed in the area and set up a new building on the site,” Rice wrote in the message to US diplomats, adding “We believe, based on solid evidence, that North Korea helped Syria build the reactor – and we have decided that it’s time to share more information on this matter with you.”
