Osteoporosis and beer 198x300 Gulping Beer may help with OsteoporosisBeer might not be that bad after all as recent studies claim that it is a good source of dietary silicon which subsequently prevents osteoporosis formation.

Silicon, a substance that has been proven to improve bone mineral density is said to be found in great amounts in the commercially-produced beers. A study made by the researchers from the Department of Food Science and Technology at the University of California proves such claim. Methods employed in the production of beer resulted in the rich silicon content of beers.

With this, the concept of beer consumption in moderation have been reestablished and strengthened as opposing views continue to plague the study. The silicon in the soluble form of Orthosilicic Acid prevents the decrease in the density of bones leading to an increased risk in fracture as well as deterioration.

Interestingly, women, when they hit their 30s increase the risk of developing osteoporosis than men because of hormonal factors.

I think press stories like that are irresponsible junk science. Even though dietary silicon is good for bones, and beer has lots of silicon, the conclusion that beer is good for bones is far from proven. (Particularly since alcohol consumption is known to weaken bones.)

You might just as well say that since dietary calcium is good for bones, and blackboard chalk has lots of calcium, then eating blackboard chalk is good for bones.
