India has revealed a new prototype computer that would virtually be available for everyone in the country.
The new technology only costs 1,500 rupees or $35. The cost of this already cheap table PC is still expected to drop even more as R&D continues to push through with their efforts to make it available for all.
Kapil Sibal, the country’s Minister for Human Resource Development, revealed the very affordable tablet PC in New Delhi last Thursday. He said that this technology is a response to the ongoing push to improve the quality of education among students across the country.
The tablet pc is powered by a Linux operating system. It has the basic functions that usual tablets PCs have. It has a web browser, Wi-Fi, multimedia player, PDF reader, and videoconference capabilities. The table PC has a solar power conductor making it usable even in rural areas.
The tablet PC’s production is made possible behind a five year effort of the Human Resource Development. Much credit is due to students from different branches of the Indian Institute of Technology who co-designed the motherboards for the tablet PC. The ministry then expects another drop from $20 to $10 due to the joint efforts of the two developers.
The new tablet is yet to be named but Sibal said that this innovation would be a response to MIT’s famous OLPC laptop. However, this model is still a prototype and the product is still on hold until there is a firm who would manufacture it according to education expert Zubin Malhotra.
