Selected to replace General David Petraeus as the head of US Central Command to oversee Iraq and Afghanistan wars is James Mattis, a counterinsurgency expert who led the battle of Falluja in Iraq last 2004.
This statement, after Defense Secretary Robert Gates’ nomination will be confirmed by the US Senate.
Gates has earlier been quoted describing Mattis as one of the military’s “outstanding combat leaders and strategic thinkers” who has a good insight on future plans for the military.
Meanwhile, reports reveal that Petraeus has been appointed last week as the new Afghanistan US commander replacing General Stanley Mc Chrystal. This was after the controversial offensive remarks pertaining to senior civilian officials made by McChrystal in was published in an article magazine.
