A drug known as Iloprost is being hailed as the new miracle drug to fight off lung cancer, according to a new study released by researchers based in the United States.
Iloprost is a drug medication known to counter pulmonary hypertension, the Raynaud’s condition as well as scleroderma. The team presented the study to the American Thoracic Society and collectively stated, “Oral Iloprost showed promise for preventing lung cancer in former, but not current, smokers in a phase II clinical trial.”
Dr. Robert Keith from the Denver Veterans Affair Medical Center together with his colleagues assessed and evaluated the biopsies which were taken from both 125 previous and present smokers. One group was treated using a placebo while the other were given the drug.
After six months, the group revealed that, “former smokers showed significant improvements on all measures, indicating that treatment with Iloprost may reduce the risk of developing lung cancer among former smokers”.
