Researchers Zbigniew Walaskzek, Margaret Hanusek and team of the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio discovered that the combination of certain plant substances can prevent cell damage caused by skin cancer.
They gave a combination of plant substances found in grapes, berries, walnuts and other plant-based foods to laboratory mice, which is manipulated to become sensitive to skin cancer, and they found that even in low doses, these substances provides protection to mice.
These natural substances found in fruits and plant-based foods include resveratrol in the skin of red grapes, calcium D-glucarate, salt of D-glucaric acid found in human bloodstream and in various fruits and vegetables, and ellagic acid in berries and walnuts.
Walaskzek and his wife Hanausek noted that their discovery will pave the way for the prevention and treatment of skin cancer and other types of cancer associated with epithelial cells.
Hanausek also believed that the inhibitory effects of these substances will also be beneficial to smokers, former smokers and those persons who have heavily tanned skin.
