The United Arab Emirates Central Bank has decided to freeze four Iranian bank accounts in the country, following up on its commitment to comply with United Nations sanctions against Iran over its growing nuclear program, according to daily newspaper Ittihad on Tuesday.
The UN Security Council have earlier announced that it will blacklist 41 Iranian accounts as part of the sanctions imposed on Iran. The four bank accounts were reportedly among those blacklisted.
“These four are among that list and have accounts in UAE banks…the remaining 37 names do not have accounts…the frozen accounts are very small,” an anonymous bank official was quoted as saying.
The move came after the Central Bank requested 23 national banks and 28 foreign finance firms to give information about any suspicious bank accounts. “They provided us with a list of names and we found those four names among them…we have not frozen any other Iranian bank accounts,” the official said.
